Letter to the Editor
Safe, healthy, abundant, and affordable. Food is a common concern of all Tama County consumers. Last year, in 2008, record energy prices, a weak U.S. dollar, higher labor costs, and strong international demand all contributed to a raise in food prices. Farmers are challenged to continue being innovative and are constantly becoming more efficient at providing food choices for the growing population of the world.
This year Food Check-Out Day will instead be Food Check-Out Week. We no longer focus on the date that Americans have earned enough money for their food for the year. Starting this year, 2009, Food Check-Out Week will be the third full week in February. The third week of February was selected as a bridge to National Nutrition Month; which is March.
This year Tama County Farm Bureau; instead of drawing for $10,000 meat certificates, will pay for groceries for one or two people during Food Check-Out Week.
