Resident voting

I understand there have been questions brought forward regarding Sunrise Hill Care & Rehab Center's residents right to vote. I would like to give you some information you may find helpful in responding to these questions. Federal law- which governs ALL long term care facilities-Say; quote- "The residents has the right to exercise his or her rights as a resident of the facility and as a citizen or resident of the United States." This includes a residents right to vote, own property, marry and enjoy all the same constitutional protections as other citizens.

One of the specific guidelines to federal/state surveyors when they are conducting long term care facility surveys to determine compliance with the laws is to ask residents, "How do you find out about your rights-such as your right to vote." "Are you allowed to vote if you so choose." These rights are not the facility's to give- or take away. As an advocate for our residents, it upsets me that some people in this community believe just because a person is a resident in the care center they are incompetent, unable to think for themselves and should no longer be allowed their constitutional right to vote. Are these same people in the community questioning the competency of other citizens of Traer and denying them their constitutional right? The residents of Sunrise Hill are free to make their own decisions regarding the upcoming issue. They have been given the opportunity to vote in the election, as they are in every election and as every citizen of Traer is.

God Bless America!!

Linda Bevins, Administrator
