Last Thursday, April 16 at about 7:30 a.m. the town of Traer lost all power.
The power outage was caused by a bird landing on a transformer and getting across the high voltage wires which caused the fuses to blow according to Mike McKinney, Traer Municipal Utilities employee.
Pat Stief, General Manager said, "it took them awhile to get the engines on the generators started and warmed up." "Once they got things running we put on the critical circuits first, such as the nursing home and then worked from there to get the rest of the town on."
There are 8 circuits in total.
The bird did approximately $1200 damage to the system.
Traffic at the stoplight at the corner of Hwy. 63 and Hwy 8 had to be directed by a Tama County Sheriff's deputy.
The outage did not delay school, although the corner of Sixth Street and Hwy. 63 proved to be difficult to navigate without the traffic lights working.
The power was off for about 45 minutes.
