Tailgating food and drink planned for Winding Stairs Festival

Food and refreshments are always an important part of any festival and the Winding Stairs Festival will not disappoint those attending this year's event. In keeping with the festival's theme, Tailgating on Second Street, food vendors who will be offering a variety of delicious tailgaiting-type food and drink on Friday evening, Aug. 7 and Saturday, Aug. 8 are: Knights of Columbus Funnel Cakes, Mini-Melts Ice Cream, North Tama Activity Center Corn-on-the-Cob and Watermelon Slices, Pita Pit, Ripley United Church of Christ, St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tama County Cattlemen, Tama County Pork Producers, Traer Historical Society Homemade Pies, Traer Lions Club Mini-Donuts and the Traer Volunteer Fire Department.

Other opportunities to partake of great food and refreshments will include: Traer United Presbyterian Church's Free Pancake Breakfast from 8 am. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Traer Memorial Building. St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church's Tailgating Entree and Appetizer Cooking Contest also at the Memorial Building. Entries may be dropped off at 12 p.m. Judging will take place at 12:30 p.m. The public may sample, receive recipes and vote for their own People's Choice winners at 1 p.m. First place winners of the entree and appetizer categories will receive $50 Traer Chamber of Commerce gift certificate. Winding Stairs Festival's Beer Garden, serving beer, wine coolers and margaritas on Friday, Aug. 7, beginning at 6 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 8, at noon. A special beer tasting event has been added this year, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 8. Over 18 different beers will be available for sampling. And don't forget to join the Tailgating Contest fun on Thursday, Aug. 6, at the North Tama Athletic Complex. Set-up begins at 4 p.m. with judging to take place at 5:30 p.m., followed by awarding of prizes at 6 p.m. For those attending the events taking place at the complex that evening, but not tailgating, the concession stand will be open.
