North Tama Basketball is Going PINK for Breast Cancer Awareness

January 13, 2010
Traer Star-Clipper

By Kelsey Upah

Almost everyone has been touched in some way by breast cancer. Whether you know someone with it, have had it yourself, or do have it, almost everyone has had to deal with it in some way. According to the American Cancer Society about one out of eight invasive breast cancers are found in women younger than forty five. Two out of three invasive breast cancers are found in women age fifty five or older. Approximately 192,370 women will have been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. Breast cancer is one hundred times less common in men. However, in 2009, about 440 men will have died from breast cancer in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society that is about one in one thousand people.

In effort to raise awareness about breast cancer, the North Tama basketball teams are encouraging everyone to wear pink to the game on January 26 against GMG. Please feel free to donate money at the game in designated boxes.

All fans are encouraged to partake in a $1 per ticket raffle. Items in the raffle include things such as: a $20 gift card to Hy-Vee, $25 and $10 gift cards to Old Chicago, $5 gift certificate to Claire's, hair care products from Master Cuts, and many other prizes! Tickets will be available for purchase beginning January 18 at the North Tama Secondary Office (2nd floor office). The drawing for all prizes will be on January 26 at half time of the boys' game. You do not have to be present to win, but must be able to come to North Tama to pick up your prize. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.
