"You Can", or as Coach Scott Connolly (softball coach from 2006-2010) said, "We Can." Scott Connolly was recently the recipient of the E. Wayne Cooley "You Can" Award. This award is given out to coaches who, young in their career show the elements of good character and leadership and who have successfully completed a rejuvenation of a program or they are successfully building a varsity program into a winning one.
Connolly's 1st time stepping on to a softball field was his 1st season with the North Tama Softball girls where he studied the game with his players and worked on the fundamentals. Although the team worked hard that 1st season their record was 3 and 20.
Coach Connolly continued to work with the girls showing them he cared about them and the game and was willing to work if they were, to grab a winning season. Their second season's record wasn't much better than the 1st, but Connolly had seen the difference in the girls hard work and determination and kept working with them.
In the years to come the teams record would improve from 2008 they were 5 and 21, to 2009 where the team ended their season 9 and 14, the best the girls had seen since Coach Connolly took over. Then in 2010 all their hard worked finally paid off and Connolly had his 1st winning season since taking over in 2006 ending their season 22 and 10. With him as coach the team set 20 new school records and had the team batting at an average of 400. Connolly was also named Class 1A Northeast Iowa District Coach of the year.
If you know Coach Scott Connolly you would also know he wouldn't take full credit for his achievements. Without the support of his assistants Kevin Darrow and Ed Hoeg, the dedication of the girls, and the parents who came to support them this award could not have happened. Congratulations Coach Connolly. The North Tama community thanks you for your hard work and dedication, and know you will be missed.
