Sister Mary Stella Morrissey, 80, of St. Mary-of-the-Woods, died at 1:05 p.m. on May 12, 2011, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born May 11, 1931, in Newton, to Jeremiah and Arlene Fellingham Morrissey and was baptized Mary Frances, and was raised in Ames.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on July 22, 1949, and professed final vows on Jan. 23, 1957. She earned a bachelor's degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and an LPN degree from Ivy Tech in Terre Haute. Of her 61 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered for 19 years as a teacher in schools in Indianan, Illinois and California. She left teaching for the ministry of nursing. Becoming a licensed practical nurse in 1976, she ministered in health service both at the Motherhouse and St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. A person of compassion and caring attention, she retired from active ministry in 2005, but continued to serve as companion to sisters on their visits to their doctors. Beginning in 2006, she gave herself totally to the ministry of prayer.
Sister is survived by her brothers and sisters, Barbara Lieb of Dixon, Calif., Pat Kvidera of Traer, Veronica Amaral of LaCrescenta, Calif,. and Jerry Morrissey of Hollywood, Calif.
Mass of Christian Burial was on Wednesday, May 18 in the Church of the Immaculate Conception at St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana.
