To the Editor:
I am writing to encourage your readers to come to the Red Cross Blood Drive, sponsored by the American Legion, on Wednesday, July 6 at the Traer Memorial Building from 12:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. The blood supply is always short; however at the this time of the year it is critically short. Many donors are needed and we are looking for at least 75 persons to respond to the call for help. Blood is a product that cannot be artificially produced and many persons from our community are in need every day, due to surgeries, accidents and illnesses. Many persons cannot donate because of their own health situations, therefore it is crucial for those who are eligible to donate.
Donors are being deferred for low iron counts, so you are encouraged to boost your levels by eating meat, fish and poultry and for better absorption of the iron, eat food high in vitamin C, such as tomatoes and citrus fruits. Avoid foods that lower you iron count, such as caffeinated beverages, chocolate, high fiber foods and medications like antacids or phosphate salts. It is recommended that you also may want to take an iron supplement for several days before donating. Also, drink several glasses of water before coming. All these suggestions will help you to donate and save lives.
