Thelma Leone Reed, 97, died Monday, July 4, 2011 at Windsor Manor Assisted Living in Vinton under the care of Iowa Hospice. A celebration of life was held Friday, July 8, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Dysart. Burial was at Dysart Cemetery.
Thelma Leone Reed was born November 2, 1913 in rural Benton County near Garrison, IA, daughter of Carl and Maude Thresher Dake. She received her education and graduated from the Vinton schools. On February 27, 1934 she was united in marriage to George Raymond Reed at the home of her sister and brother-in-law Orville and LaVonne McVey near Garrison. Thelma and George made their home farming all their married life on a farm near Garrison and following George's death in 1954 she remained on the farm. In June of 2009 she moved to the Windsor Manor Assisted Living Center in Vinton where she passed away and went to join her husband on Monday, July 4, 2011 at the age of 97 years. Thelma was an active member of the Dysart United Methodist Church, UMW and Dysart American Legion Auxiliary. In her free time she enjoyed spending many hours playing cards in various card clubs in the community she was preceded in death by her parents; husband George, one brother Myron Dake and one sister LaVonne McVey. She is survived by two sons; Donald (Kate) Reed and Richard (Lynn) Reed both of Waterloo, two daughters; Karen (Derald) Merchant of Vinton, and Monica Koshivas of Tipton, 12 grandchildren and several great and great great-grandchildren.
A memorial fund has been established. Overton Funeral Home in Dysart was in charge of the arrangements.
