Eleanor Bernice Steffeny, 91, Traer, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011 at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer of natural causes. A visitation was held on Friday, September 23, 2011 from 4 to 7 p.m. A memorial service was held on Saturday, September, 24, 2011 at 10 a.m. Burial followed at Buckingham Cemetery Traer.
Eleanor Bernice Steffeny was born April 15, 1920 on a farm east of Traer, daughter of George P. and Emma M. Bohnstengel Schmidt. She attended Traer Schools graduating in the Class of 1940. Eleanor worked as a secretary at the school and also Naylor's Grocery. On July 29, 1942 she was united in marriage to Donald D. Steffeny at the First Methodist Church in Waterloo. Don and Eleanor began farming near Garrison and later established their own farm in 1949 northeast of Traer. For 29 years she and Don were the caretakers for Clark Park and was the owner/manager for Steffeny Chainsaws and Repairs. In 2003 they moved to town and in 2007 she entered the Sunrise Hill Care Center. Eleanor's death came at the care center early Wednesday morning, September 21, 2011 at the age of 91 years. She was an active member of the Ripley United Church of Christ where she served in many roles one of which included Church Historian. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald on February 9, 2009 and one brother Wesley. She is survived by one son Robert Steffeny and wife MaryAnn, Mary Kroymann and husband Robert all of Traer, Marilyn Currell and husband Dennis of Cedar Rapids and Marlene Steffeny of Marion, 9 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
