Traer residents invited to meet-and-greet with Rome teachers

April 18, 2012
Traer Star-Clipper

What do the North Tama Elementary, Traer, Iowa and American Overseas School in Rome (AOSR), Italy have in common? Well for one thing, the current principal of the AOSR elementary in Rome is past North Tama Elementary Principal, Steve Foster. Secondly, Teresa O'Meara, the Elementary Guidance Counselor at North Tama has gone to Rome for a week long training of the students on how to be Conflict Managers on the playground. This is a program that all North Tama 5th Graders are trained and participate in. Student's being able to solve problems is a great skill to have in life. At North Tama the students get real life experience and practice on the playground during lower elementary recesses, solving student disputes and problems. The last thing in common between these two schools is, four teachers from AOSR will be visiting Traer and the North Tama School system during the week of April 23-27. The AOSR teachers are interested in seeing and learning from an American school in action. We live in a global society and this is a great chance for North Tama Schools to make connections with a school nearly half way around the world. We see many exciting possibilities educationally for our students developing out of these connections being made with the American Overseas School in Rome.

The Rome teachers want to see and learn about North Tama's use of technology in the classroom, our educational initiatives like: Daily 5 Reading, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math projects (STEM), Character Counts, Accelerated Reader Program, the online IXL math program, and the Saxon Math and Spelling/Phonics curriculum. The AOSR teachers are also very interested in how we use the Collaborative Decision-Making Process in coming to a consensus on the next step or project to undertake educationally. Another point of interest is our use of data to make educational decisions, and the extensive testing we incorporate to see where our students are academically and what will meet their needs educationally. This will be a wonderful opportunity for North Tama to show off all the great things going on in the school everyday.

To cap off the week, there will be an old fashion hotdog barbeque/bonfire at Denise and Bob Cue's home, 403 West Street, Friday, April 27, starting at 4:00pm. The entire North Tama staff and community are invited. Hotdogs and a fire to cook your own dog's will be provided. Pease bring your own lawn chair and beverage of choice. You can RSVP to Mary McLean at the school between 8:00am-4:00pm, 319-478-2265 ext. 153 so we can have enough food for everyone. Come meet our Rome guests and show them how much fun a Mid-west Iowa cookout can be!
