The 2012 Relay for Life of Tama County, scheduled for June 15-16, offers several ways to give toward the fight against cancer. Many businesses in Dysart, Traer, Gladbrook, Lincoln, and Garwin have "coins for cancer" or "dime bottles" with the label inviting you to "Drop in Your Coins."
Raffle tickets are being sold for three special items: a handmade quilt, a metal sculpture, and a hot air balloon ride. The Farmers Savings Bank in Traer will hold a silent auction on May 4th at 4 p.m.
Gladbrook/Reinbeck Middle School students will hold a mini-relay on May 18. South Tama Elementary students have planned special events. Many other Tama County businesses and individuals are contributing to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life by donating items for the Silent Auction to be held during the Relay.
The Relay for Life of Tama County will be held at the South Tama H.S. track, beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 15. This event is open to the public and everyone is invited to join in honoring and remembering those who faced cancer.
The Coin Bottles found in local businesses provide many dollars toward the goal of the American Cancer Society of research, education, advocacy, and service. A full bottle holds nearly $100. Dysart has raised over $500 through this simple giving opportunity. Look for a bottle at the stores in your town and help your favorite business win the "Battle of the Bottles".
Raffle tickets are available for three special items, with the winning tickets drawn at the Relay for Life on June 15. Winners do not need to be present to win. Contact any of the persons at the end of this article to purchase a raffle ticket. Luane Lorenzen of Traer has designed and pieced a special quilt for this event. As a cancer survivor, she appreciates the work of the American Cancer Society.
Deb Ewoldt, of the Blacksmith Boutique in Dysart, has created an original metal sculpture for the raffle. Her metal designs have won awards and are featured in many prominent venues.
The third item available in the raffle is a hot-air balloon ride given by Pete Holden of Traer. He is well-known for his expertise in hot-air balloons and generously offers rides to others. The date for the ride will be scheduled with the raffle winner. Drawing for the winners will occur during the Relay at the South Tama High School track on June 15 and winners need not be present to win.
The Silent Auction is an annual part of the Relay for Life of Tama County. Many businesses and individuals generously donate items. There will be oil changes, pizza certificates, original handcrafted items, candles, theater tickets, wine baskets, and much more. This auction runs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. during the Relay.
The American Cancer Society is dedicated to fighting cancer through research, education, advocacy and services. All money raised at the Relay for Life of Tama County will benefit these efforts. If you are interested in learning more, contact one of these persons:
