Gracie Manfull, this year's Little Miss Poppy, gave out flowers to downtown businesses as part of Poppy Days, April 16-19 in Traer. Here, she presents one to Mayor Pete Holden. For over 90 years, the American Legion Auxiliary has sponsored Poppy Day to remind America that millions have sacrificed their lives and health to keep our nation strong and free.
On May 16, "Miss Poppy" Grace Manfull, granddaughter of Dennis and Kathy Manfull, distributed poppies throughout the downtown area. Other volunteers will help on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Please be generous in giving to this worthy project.
The poppy, which grew wild on the battlefields of World War I, became the symbol of sacrifice for many who fought in the war. Their brilliant red bloom, so much like the blood which was shed at Flanders Fields, became a sign of hope and renewal for those who lived and walked away from this awful ordeal.
Please wear a poppy to remember the men and women who have served our country.
