Twelve years ago on May 3rd, Tom McDermott called a young recent college graduate to offer him a job as a social studies teacher and head basketball coach. Fast-forward to today, and that former college graduate now prepares to move on from North Tama, but is so thankful for the opportunities the school and community have given him.
If you would have told me twelve years ago all of the things I would experience as an educator and coach, I would have said, "If half of those would be true, I could retire happy on those events alone." There are too many people to thank individually, but I would like to mention some groups that have supported me and allowed me to grow professionally and personally.
I am thankful to the North Tama staff (current and past), administration, and school board (current and past). Throughout the years, you have motivated me and placed me in positions of leadership that have allowed me to grow as an educator.
I want to extend my gratitude and thanks to my coaching staffs, both football and basketball. We set out to be mentors and builders of great young men; and along the way, you have allowed me to experience moments people only dream about being a part of.
Thank you to the hundreds (if not thousands) of parents for allowing me to educate your son or daughter. Whether it was at school, conferences, athletic events, or any other time outside of school, you have supported your child and you have supported my efforts to educate the curriculum and teach lessons in life.
To the entire North Tama community, I am forever grateful. You are an amazing community that is passionate about the success of the school and its students. To the countless people who volunteered and donated to the programs I was involved in, just know your efforts were truly appreciated and made a difference in the lives of those students and athletes.
Finally, to my former and current students and athletes. You are the best! Thank you for always expecting Mr. (Coach) Thoren to challenge and inspire you. Knowing that you expected me to make your time worthwhile has inspired me to continuously reflect and evaluate my methods. I hope you learned more from me than just information and X's and O's.
Mr. (Coach) Brent Thoren
