Local band performs well in competition

The El Kahir Oriental Band participted in the Central States Shrine Association competition August 10th and 11th held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. There were oriental bands from eight states competing in the small, medium and large band competitions. Competition was held in Ballyhoo, which is outside freelance performance, Fantasy, which is held on an indoor stage, and Parade, which was in the Grand Parade on Saturday morning at Kirkwood Community College.

The El Kahir Oriental Band was awarded a First Place Trophy in Ballyhoo, Fantasy and Parade competitions in the medium band class. Members of the El Kahir Oriental Band are Jim Fackler - Band Director who played the musket, Jay Owens - President who played a musket, Tom Kehoe - Secretary who also played the big drum, Marlin Mullnix - PP who played the small drum, Butch Scoot - Vice President who played the gong and Marvin Boldt who played the tambourine. There were over 3,500 shriners and their wives who attended the annual CSSA Convention. The 2012 CSSA convention will be held in Branson, Missouri.
