Robert "Bob" E Minkel was born November 22, 1921 to Wesley and Lois Minkel. He graduated from Geneseo High School in 1939 then attended Iowa State University. He later graduated from Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe , MO and was employed by Boss Hotel Association in Des Moines until he entered the US Army on November 7, 1942 and served in Japan during WWII. He was discharged in February 1946 as a Master Sergeant. Bob and Hazel Stouffer were married in Hattiesburg, MS on June 16, 1945. After his army discharge, Bob partnered with his father on the family farm. In 1965 they built a new home there. He continued to farm until his retirement in 1983. Bob and Hazel moved from the farm to Sunrise Hill Suites in October 2011. Bob has been very active in the Geneseo and Dysart communities. He served as financial secretary of the Geneseo Methodist church for many years, was secretary of the Geneseo school board and continued on as secretary of the Dysart-Geneseo school board when the schools merged, was an active member of the Dysart Lions club, also a long time member of the Dysart American Legion. Bob drove a school bus for many years with a regular route and also taking school groups to out of town activities for the Geneseo, Dysart-Geneseo and Union schools. After his retirement he worked part time for the Dysart Co-Op. In his spare time, Bob really enjoyed wood working, tinkering in the shop, going to stock car races and sitting on the deck smoking his pipe. Bob passed away at the age of 90 on August 15, 2012 of an extended illness. He is survived by his wife and two sons: Brian (Pat) of Woodstock, GA and Joel of Traer, IA: two step grand children, Mike Nation (Penny) of Aurora,CO and Michelle Barber (Steve) and six great grandchildren also his sister-in-law, Sandy Boomer of Traer, IA and several nieces and nephews.
