NORTH TAMA Counselor's Corner

August 31, 2012
Juliana Reisner - North Tama Counselor , Traer Star-Clipper

It feels like summer just started and here we are already, back in school! I want to say a big "Welcome back!" to all the returning North Tama students and a "Glad you're here!" to all our new students. Second full week of school is in full swing.

Now that school is back in session, here are some tips to help create a smooth beginning to the school year.

Create a routine that works for your family. Students do better when they know what to expect and when to expect it. Be sure to include homework time, meal time, bath/shower time, and bed time. Include your older students in the discussion.

Read all school information as it comes to you. You don't want to miss out on any important information or dates!

Check your child's planner each evening to make sure that he or she is recording daily homework assignments and long-term test and project due dates. (Junior high students are provided a planner.)

Check PowerSchool for updated information on your child's classes.

Provide a quiet place for homework.

For junior high students, help your child clean and organize his or her backpack each evening. As students get older a gentle reminder may be all they need.

Encourage your child to check his or her backpack in the morning to be sure that he or she brings all necessary materials to school.

Contact your child's teacher/school counselor/administrator with any questions or concerns.

Maintain high expectations

Nurture and give praise.

If your student is having difficulty getting started this year, please talk to his or her teachers, school counselor, or principal. We are all here to help students, and we love to help them start their year on a positive note.
