Food, music and fountains this weekend

The Dysart Lions will be dedicating the "Lion in the Park" this Sunday, June 23, with a ceremony starting at 4:30 0.m. The new drinking fountain was the idea of Lion Dennis Tompkins, who saw an ad in the Lions International magazine and communicated to the board of directors that he felt the Dysart Lions should look into this for a project to provide a drinking fountain close to the playground and open shelter house.

The base cost of the Lion was $4,300 plus the plumbing and the cost of a cement pad to set it on. Lion Tompkins started the project by writing grant applications and calling on contractors to help with the project. In the end, he secured $4,300 in grants and donations from the Tama County Community Foundation, the Dysart Community Foundation, Iowa Network Services, and the Farmers Co-operative Telephone Company. Dennis also received in-kind donations from John's Landscaping to dig in the waterline to the fountain and E.C. Concrete formed and poured the cement pad for the location. Members of the local club set the Lion in place and hooked up the line to the fountain while some young playground users watched them work. As soon as the work was completed, the kids were ready to stick their heads in the Lion's mouth and have a cool drink of water!

Lions International Director Judy Hankom and District Governor-elect Donald Maynes will be on hand for the dedication ceremony as well as Mayor Pamela Thiele, members of city council and local members of the Dysart Lions Club. The public is welcome to attend this ceremony.

The new Lions fountain complements other additions to the Dysart City Park from the Dysart Lions Club including two shelter houses, the tennis court, and the new concession stand and youth athletic equipment storage building now in use.

Following the dedication, there will be Music in the Park with Kent Aschenbrenner and the Getaway City Band. The Lions concession stand will be open with hamburgers, brats and hot dogs being grilled for this special occasion.

The cost of a delicious meal is just $5 and includes a cold drink. The meal will last from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
