Marilyn La Vonne (Kusel) Burhenn, 88, of Dysart, IA, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2013, at Sunnycrest Nursing Center in Dysart.
Visitation will be held at Overton Funeral Home on Friday, November 22, 2013 from 3 to 6 p.m. with service the following day at Zion Lutheran Church at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Dysart Cemetery.
Marilyn was born to Elmer and Ella Kusel on January 8, 1925, on a farm south of Dysart on Hwy 21. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart, IA. For eight years, she attended country school at Homer No. 4 in Benton County, and graduated from Dysart High School in 1942.
After graduation, Marilyn worked as a clerk for JC Penney in Waterloo, Bader's and Cold's Grocery stores in Dysart, and Harley Woodley's Coast to Coast in Dysart.
Marilyn was married to Glynn Burhenn on September 20, 1945. In 1947, they began farming at her parent's farm south of Dysart and did so until retirement in 1990. They left their farm in 1998 and built a home on Park Street in Dysart. They were married for 60 years.
Marilyn was a charter member of the Dysart Women's Club, and in 2001 was presented with their "Hall of Fame" award. She was a life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart, IA, where she taught Sunday school and held several office positions. Her hobbies included card club, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and golfing, which she enjoyed "as long as her legs let her". She loved writing letters, and never missed an opportunity to send a birthday or get-well card.
Marilyn is survived by her two daughters, Becky Burhenn of Dysart, IA, and Jacquie (Scott) Dunker of Marengo, IL; her two grandchildren, Chad (Jennifer) Seedorf of McHenry, IL, and Erika (Wesley) Walker of Algonquin, IL; and two great-grandchildren, Julian and Cameron.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Ella Kusel; her husband Glynn; sister Eleanor, and grandson, Eric.
