BASIC, Brothers And Sisters In Christ, is an ecumenical youth group in Traer that is planning a banquet for February 23 at the Memorial Building to inform the community about what BASIC is doing in the lives of youth in the community.
BASIC has been in the town of Traer for several years and there have been a few different leaders. Craig Greiner is the current leader, taking over for Tom TeBeest in June of 2013. "Taking the job, I was most excited to guide and help young adults," said Greiner.
It used to be that BASIC held a banquet every year to tell the community what it was all about and to raise money to keep BASIC running. The past few years, BASIC hasn't held one but Greiner wanted to change that. "Our goal for the banquet is to inform the community how God is using NtBASIC in the lives of our young adults and they have a lot to offer our community. NtBASIC's funding is primarily through private donation and this is one of our major fundraising activities," said Greiner.
The annual banquet is a major opportunity for BASIC to raise money and stay alive. Money that is donated will be used for sending students to camps, retreats, and providing a comfortable environment each Wednesday night for students to learn about God and have fun while doing it.
The banquet's theme this year is "Welcome to the Oscars." There are around 40-60 students attending NtBASIC each week and many of those students will be serving at the banquet. There will be groups of four (two high school students, and two junior high students) decorating tables and "dressing up" as characters from the show/movie theme they've chosen. Also, they are embellishing their tables with the theme of their choice. A few of the themes are "Greased Lightning", "Frozen", "Napoleon Dynamite", "Duck Dynasty", "Smurfs" and "Despicable Me".
Wyatt Kucera, a senior involved in BASIC, says "I am excited to serve the community with my Brothers and Sisters in Christ as I dress up as Pedro from 'Napoleon Dynamite' with Ryan Snider as Napoleon."
The banquet will be held at the Traer Memorial Building on February 23. There will be social time from 5:15 to 6:00. Dinner will be then be served followed by a program. Dinner includes either a hot pork sundae or a hot chicken sundae with sides of a lettuce salad and a roll. Dessert will be Hansen's Dairy Ice Cream.
