Roy L. Kern, 77, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2014 at his home. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 1, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Overton Funeral Home in Traer with a service on Friday, May 2 at 10:30 a.m. at United Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Buckingham Cemetery in Traer.
Roy Laverne Kern was born on November 14, 1936, on a farm outside of Traer, the son of Lowell and Alice (Porter) Kern. Roy graduated from Dinsdale High School and served in the Army National Guard. On August 22, 1959, he was united in marriage to Ellen Neidick at the United Presbyterian Church in Traer. Roy farmed his entire life until his health wouldn't allow it. He loved riding and training horses, helping the local 4-H groups, going to cattle sales, and making toys for his grandkids. Roy was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Traer and served as a Deacon and Elder. Roy died at his home, surrounded by his loved ones, at the age of 77 on Monday, April 28, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; and one sister. Roy is survived by his wife, Ellen; two sons, Scott (Sharon) Kern of Traer and Robert (Debora) Kern of Toledo; a daughter, Kathleen (D.J.) Frana of Clinton; a sister, Marjorie (Emil) Cufr; and ten grandchildren, Hannah, Abraham, Jeremiah, Rachel, Elijah, Abigail and Emma Kern, and Elizabeth, Joshua and Rebekah Frana.
