James Monat, 61, of Traer, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at his home. Visitation was held at St. Paul's Catholic Church on Wednesday, May 21 with service on Thursday, May 22 at 10:30 a.m. (Jim's 30th wedding anniversary). Burial will follow at St. Paul's Cemetery.
James "Jim" Nicholas Monat was born on January 21, 1953, in Waterloo, the son of Victor and Mary (Weber) Monat. He grew up east of Raymond and attended St. Joseph School in Raymond and Jesup High School. On May 22, 1976, Jim was united in marriage to Nancy Kay Thoma at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Waterloo. The couple made their home in rural Waterloo and moved to Traer in 1991. Jim worked at John Deere for 27 years, retiring in 1998. He then worked as an organic farmer and raised grass-fed beef. A lover of all of God's creation, Jim enjoyed bow hunting, riding his motorcycle, and woodworking. He was an all-around handyman. He was also involved with World Wide Marriage Encounter and enjoyed being a Snowbird for four years. Most importantly, Jim was very active in his church. Jim died at the age of 61 on Sunday, May 18, 2014, at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Thomas; and a grandchild. Jim is survived by his wife; three sons, Scott (Jana) Monat of Clutier, Jeremy (Amber) Monat of Traer, and Nicholas Monat of Traer; three daughters, Brandy (Randy) Girsch of Reinbeck, Elizabeth Monat of Traer, and Amy Monat of Traer; three brothers, Daniel (Patricia) Monat of Jesup, Theodore (Cynthia) Monat of Independence, and Anthony (Gertrude) Monat of Lansing; two sisters, Victoria (Kevin) Link of Arizona and Angela (David) Floyd of Jesup; eleven grandchildren, Case, Maxon, Lucy, Abigail, Aubree, Ava, Josie and Jack Monat, and Lane, Macy, and Brinley Girsch; and one grandchild on the way. Jim was a man of great faith which lead him to be a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
