Heartland Co-Op will see their operations in Traer increase with a new grain storage facility just south of town to be completed in time for the fall harvest.

"The purpose of this new facility is to increase our capacity to take in and store grain in Traer," Joel Iseminger, Location Manager said. "Our new facility will have two unloading legs that can dispense 15,000 bushels an hour, a dryer, two wet corn holding bins and six storage bins to hold 2.4 million bushels combined."

Currently, the facility is under contruction by Mid-States Millwright and Builders Inc. of Nevada outside of downtown Traer next to Highway 63.

"It's great to have a site out by the highway, which will be relatively easy for farmers," Iseminger said. "The traffic, noise and dust will all be at the very edge of town and not downtown affecting residents."

According to Iseminger, the new grain storage facility comes as a need for Heartland Co-Op as they have seen yields per acre and overall number of acres increase since the 1980s.

"We traditionally take in more grain than we have storage for," Iseminger said. "There hasn't been any new storage buildings here in Traer since the 1980s, so we are woefully behind as far as keeping up with the rest of the area. We are too confined in our downtown location for expansion and found the site."

In addition to fulfilling the current needs of area farmers, Iseminger also pointed to future growth for Heartland Co-Op in Traer and there is room for expansion.

"This facility will allow for us to move and handle grain more efficiently," Iseminger said. "There's also more room out their for more bins and is being built with future in mind. This has the potential for that expansion and is a forward-looking decision. We predict that yields will continue to increase over time and gives us a competitive edge as we fulfill a need."
