Shirley Crawford

January 3, 2019
Traer Star-Clipper

Shirley Jean Crawford was born in Vinton, Iowa, on December 18, 1934, daughter of John Dorwin and Marie Rosina (Schultz) Franklin. She was raised in Belle Plaine with 7 brothers and 1 sister. All of the boys were in sports so Shirley and her family proudly attended countless track meets and football, basketball and baseball games. She said her brothers teased her a lot growing up but were always there when she needed them most. Shirley's family spent weekends visiting grandparents, aunt, uncles and cousins. Her father served as a Deacon in his church and Shirley, like her mother, was baptized and confirmed as a Lutheran. A highlight in her life was when her father named the University of Iowa's mascot "Herky the Hawk" through a contest in July of 1948. Shirley waitressed at a restaurant during high school and graduated with the Belle Plaine High School Class of 1952. She trained as a telephone operator in Cedar Rapids, then worked for the Central Iowa Telephone Company until her marriage to Robert John Crawford at the Belle Plaine Lutheran Church on February 28, 1954. They lived on a farm southwest of Traer and raised three children and a dog named, Loki, who was as mischievous as the Norse God after whom he was named. Shirley worked at the grain elevators in Buckingham and Traer, was Secretary of the North Tama School Board; and sold Weekenders clothing. She served as President of the Traer Chamber of Commerce and helped design the "Wind Up in Traer" welcome signs. Shirley loved shopping for clothing and was always immaculately dressed. She enjoyed dancing, golfing and playing cards, particularly Bridge, Pepper and Golf. Shirley travelled across the country from coast to coast and North to South. She faithfully sent cards to all of her nieces and nephews on their birthdays.

Shirley passed away at the age of 84 years on Monday, December 24, 2018, at Sunrise Hill Care Center of Traer. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob, in 2003; her brothers: Charles, Donald, Robert and James; a son-in-law, Dave Benter; brothers-in-law, Don Crawford and Ron Abbott; and sister-in-law, Verna Crawford. Shirley is survived by her children: James Crawford of Cedar Rapids; Linda (Bob) Krause of Oconomowoc, WI; and Penny (Steve) Hubbard of Traer; her siblings: Tom (Pam) Franklin, David (Rita) Franklin, Virginia Engel-Abbott and Rich Franklin; sisters-in-law, Donna (Donald) Wolfgram, Barbara Franklin and Mardelle Tinkey; 5 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and 17 beloved nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
