Windstream has announced it has deployed fixed internet technology to deliver broadband speeds up to 100 megabits per second (Mbps) to homes in Traer, according to a release by the communications company.

"Windstream is using fixed wireless technology as part of its participation in the FCC's Connect America Fund initiative, which is designed to support network upgrades in rural areas that would otherwise not be economically feasible," the release stated.

According to Greg Gray, the Director of Field Operations for Windstream in Iowa, fixed wireless is a technology that uses microwave signals sent and received from antennas mounted on utility poles to connect usually rural homes and users to an Internet Service Provider. These pole-mounted nodes or antennas are now up and high-speed Internet service is available to dozens of homes in Traer. The town is one of more than a dozen communities around the state that Windstream has made this investment of this particular technology, including Montezuma, Pleasantville, Albia and Columbus Junction.

"Fixed wireless technology is an alternative to traditional cable networks that enables Windstream to deploy broadband service more quickly and cost-effectively in rural areas," Brad Hedrick, president of Windstream operations in Iowa said. "I'm delighted that we have been able to bring this innovative technology to homes in Traer and across the state. We know customers want faster speeds, and we are committed to delivering them."

According to the release, Windstream has invested $28 million in infrastructure improvements across Iowa so that households in a dozen cities and communities can now enjoy faster internet speeds. More information about fixed wireless can be found by visiting Windstream.com.
